Safety tips
Most people who buy and sell on nixomarket are honest. A few simple habits keep you safe from the few who are not.
Before you buy
- Read the whole ad and look at all the photos. Ask the seller about anything that is not clear before you agree to buy.
- Look at the seller's profile: how long they have been a member, their other ads and, for companies, the business details on the ad.
- If a price looks too good to be true, it usually is. Be extra careful with phones, laptops, game consoles, designer goods and tickets.
- Agree the price, the delivery and how you pay in nixomarket messages, so you both have a written record.
Meeting in person
- Meet in a busy public place in daylight, for example in front of a shop or a station. Take a friend with you if you can.
- Check the item carefully before you pay. Switch electronics on and test them, and check that phones are not locked to someone else's account.
- For expensive items, avoid carrying a lot of cash. A payment you can trace is safer.
- Sellers: do not let strangers into your home on your own, and keep valuables out of sight.
Paying safely
- Never send money to someone you have not met for an item you have not seen.
- Payments to sellers go directly to them. Card payments with Buy now and PayPal's "Goods and services" option can give you buyer protection; bank transfers usually cannot be reversed.
- Check that the account holder name for a bank transfer matches the seller.
- Never pay with gift cards, vouchers, cryptocurrency or money transfer services such as Western Union for an item from someone you do not know.
- Never share your card PIN, the codes your bank sends you by text message or your passwords. We will never ask you for your password.
Fake messages and links
- Be careful with links that ask for your password or card details.
- Scammers send fake "payment received" emails and fake delivery or payment pages. Check payments in your own bank or PayPal account, never through a link someone sends you.
- Keep the conversation on nixomarket messages until you trust the other person. Be careful if someone wants to move to WhatsApp, text messages or email straight away.
- Sellers: be careful with buyers who offer to pay more than the price and ask you to send back the difference, or who ask you to pay for a "courier" or "insurance" first.
Sending and receiving parcels
- Use tracked delivery for valuable items and keep your proof of postage. For Buy now orders, add the courier and tracking number so the buyer can follow the parcel.
- Take photos of the item and of the packed parcel before you send it.
- Buyers: check the parcel when it arrives. If something is wrong, contact the seller first through messages.
Protect your account
- Use a strong password that you do not use anywhere else, and sign out on shared computers.
- Keep your email address up to date, so we can reach you.
- Share personal details such as your home address only when you need to, for example for delivery. Never send copies of your ID to another member.
If something goes wrong
- Report a suspicious ad with the Report button on the ad page, and suspicious messages with the Report as spam button in the conversation.
- Contact us and tell us what happened. We can remove ads and block accounts that break our rules.
- If you have lost money, contact your bank, card provider or PayPal straight away. In the UK you can also report fraud to Action Fraud (www.actionfraud.police.uk); in other countries, contact the police.
